I just purchased the DMX Operator and had 15X8 scenes programmed that night. Very cool & very easy. Kudos for your ease of use as I've never touched a DMX controller before.

However, I am more familiar with MIDI and got the unit so I could program scenes in my midi files and play the scenes when I do my solo act.

The documentation was good. I set the midi channel on the DMX to 14 (15 is my effects unit and 16 is my back-up vocal unit), I mapped out the notes (C0 = 101, Db0 = 102, etc.). I programmed some changes (measure 1 C0, measure 2 Db0, etc.) and pressed play.

The DMX Operator changed it's display and turned on to the correct scene as soon as it was supposed to. The lights came on. It was a thing of beauty! Then on the second measure, the display changed as programmed and the lights didn't budge. No matter what I set the midi to, the DMX unit will perform the first task and no others.

I know the midi controller is working. It's changing the DMX display exactly as programmed. But the DMX Operator is not getting the change to the lights after the first step. What am I doing wrong?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Jim

Hey musicman4561, Welcome to the forums!

I am working on your problem right now. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but I'll try to have an answer to you sometime Monday (got plans tomorrow) The very first thing that came to mind was the speed and fade times. Make sure those are set at 0 and try it! I don't think this is the problem though! Like I said i'll try for monday. Sorry for your inconvenience!

Okay, I think I figured it out. It's not how I would envision it, but it works.

I placed a controller event between each note change (controller value doesn't seem to matter) and all of a sudden, each scene change was enabled exactly as programmed.

Now is the fun part; programming each song with scenes...

While I didn't get the solution from the tech folks here (and they may know a better way), the purpose of a forum is to share info. So if anyone else out there has the same problem, this is what worked for me.

Take care,
Jim

Glad you figured it out jim!!! I wasn't having any luck. of course I thought it was a controller issue. Didn't think about the midi part. It does sound kind of annoying though that you have to place an event after each change, doesn't it?

This may seem like a dumb question, but what is a controller event? I haven't used a midi setup for my DMX Cont. Pro yet, I am just doing my homework before i see if it's right for us. I plan to run the MIDI signal through Garageband on my Mac. Not super high tech, but practical. Does anyone have any thoughts? Also, we travel a lot. Is a CF card a good investment?

I was hoping to control the scenes of my DMX Operator via a midi Foot controller. The same I use for bringing up patches on my guitar rig. I have a few of them lying around and thought I could connect one to the midi-in on the DMX Operator. Assuming the mapping would be pretty straight forward with bank one of my foot controller controlling bank one of the DMX Operator, etc. But I can't seem to get it to do anything? I figured I just needed the midi channel set to same channel on both? Is this not possible? I want to be able to control scenes via foot controller during live performances. I sure hope it's possible. Thanks.

Hey Dave,

You need to find out what midi notes your foot controller is sending. They need to match up with the notes that the console uses. Check your user manual and it will tell you which notes do what.

Hope this helps!

JTH,

I'll look. I'm not at home to look that up at the moment. If I recall the foot controller sends out a number message. i.e. 1, 2, 126, etc. I presumed 1 would pull up bank one, scene 1 on the DMX Operator for example and 2 may bring up scene two of bank one on the Operator, etc. with my guitar rig, I map these receiving commands to actual patch #'s in my sound processor that represent the effect I would like to call up. However, on the Operator I don't imagine there is a mapping facility, but rather a more generic calling up of a scene in a bank in a numerical order. I will need to experiment further. Thanks
