Re: Pre recorded shows

serraava ·
Generally pre-programing refers to patching the console and setting up a few basic cues, effects, chases, scenes, submasters, and/or palettes depending on your console. This is generally done with off-line editors. Just about all my shows are pre-programed in this fashion, so I simply have to load the show from disk or USB drive and start the fun programing. It is a great time saver. The type of pre-programing islanddj is talking about is done with virtualization software, like Elation's...

Update! I have come up with a hardwired (literally) solution to the issue with fade time deactivation. I'll try to explain as clearly as I can, and apologize ahead of time if I lose anyone along the way. I'm using the Behringer FCB1010 to control the Operator 192 via MIDI. What I forgot about the 1010, is the ability to use the 2 built in "Switches" to control analog functions of amplifiers, just like a traditional stomp box that controls reverb/clean channel functions, etc. These are simple...

If you are running DMX 500+ feet, I would highly recommend a DMX Branch or Opti Splitter of some sort. More then 1000' and you will need one because the signal drops off at that point. An opti-splitter does more then isolate. It also helps amplify DMX signal like a DA (distro amp) does for video. The isolation also isn't for lighting strikes, it helps if you have faulty power or your console and fixtures are running off of a different ground. This can cause problems just like in audio,...

Sorry... I'm a bit late jumping in here and this is just another bit of useful DMX knowledge... per DMX512 protocol document, the maximum number of devices that can be supported per run of DMX is 32 devices. Now... that being said, lest you panic, a dimmer rack counts as 1 device.... The only way to successfully get around this limitation of 32 devices per line is to insert an opto splitter. Then you have the capability of 32 devices per output port on the opto splitter. Honestly though,...

32 max is pushing it. I generally start having problems with LEDs at 8 fixtures, depending on length of the run and fixtures in question. Dimmers, I daisy chain those things forever and they don't care, and I am talking racks upon racks upon racks. Movers, depends on the brand and length of cable in question. Some days it's 16, others it's 20, sometimes I can only get 6 on before the 7th starts acting up. If your last fixture in line is acting funny, and a terminator isn't helping, chances...

I definitely know how important lighting is to a wedding...however it's hard to sell a mom on some lights on a band. However, I have found it easier to sell the mood of a room, their name on a gobo, a spotlight on the first dance, uplighting the backdrop or rear wall the same color as the bridesmaid dresses...this is the stuff that makes sense to the purchasers. However, I want the lights for the show! On a side note...I went to demo a design wash 250, and design spot 250 today. If found out...

No problem. If you go to ETC's website, on their Express page at the bottom there is a section called related products. In that section, you can click on Expression Offline and it will go to a new page. Click on the download tab and in the Off-line Software section, you will see Expression 3/Express/Insight 3 Off-line Software. Download and install that. Power Spot 575 vs Design Spot 575. It really depends on what features you need. CMY, frost, zoom, animation wheel, iris, and dual rotating gobo wheels can be very useful and powerful tools. The question is do you need them? That is something you have to weigh out for yourself. Power Spots also don't come in a white form, only the DS line does. I can say from my stand point, I use iris a lot do to the nature of shows I do. So every mover I own has to have one. I can also say that the PS 575IE...

Frank, The Magic 260 will only run a maximum of 16 channels per fixture. Do these lights have the capability of running in a different mode with less channels? As for the "format error", make sure that you do not use any channel names more than once (for example, if you have more than one color wheel, name one as color 1 and the next as color 2). Also check all your steps and make sure that you are not overlapping any channel values. Hope this helps

This is provided the lights use binary, switch one=1, two=2, three=4, four=8, five=16, six=32, seven=64, eight=128, and nine=256. Some lights use there own 'odd' settings, like HES Trackspots for example. Both the settings for a Universal Controller and DMX are different from binary. Read your manual before you assume it is binary, or look on the back of the light by the dip switches. A lot of lights tell you what the 'code' is for their dip switches.

So the house dimmer is tied into the same line as the rest of the lights, and you have both the x-fade and compu controlling them with an a/b switch? You are saying all the lights work ok when controlling with compu, but when you switch it to the x-fade the leds go nuts? If so, they are probably losing dmx since the x-fade is only 6 channels. The only option you have is to set the leds so that when they lose dmx they do not go to auto mode. Finally, you can also add a wall panel from the...

Justin, You're right...it would clean up the screen as far as scene buttons go, but then I'm adding a controller on the screen. The bottom line though is that it slows down the overall execution of a "fade-in" scene. Which controller are you going with? How much will it cost you? I already have a DMX Operator 192, but I doubt that would work as an external MIDI controller. Have you ever seen the x-keys controllers? http://www.xkeys.com/xkeys/xk12884.php Thanks, Brian

Re: Operator 192 questions newbie...

I believe your issue is that each fixture on the 'Fixture' button represents 16 channels. Since you address the lights in numerical order, the 'Fixture' buttons won't line up. So fixture 1 is really channels 1-16. Fixture 2 is channels 17-32, then 3 is channels 33-48 and so on. Try setting your first group of lights to channel 1 making them Fixture 1. Then your second group of lights as channel 17 making them Fixture 2. Lastly, your last group of lights to channel 33 making them Fixture 3.

There are 16 MIDI Channels. In order for MIDI devices to be receive and/or send MIDI information properly, the device must have a MIDI "ID", or MIDI Channel, from 1 to 16. The reason is so you can "daisy chain' several MIDI devices and make sure each device is receving the proper MIDI information. Hope this helps.

Sounds like a bad cable. Is the line/s terminated as well? It could be reflections back down the DMX line which a terminator is there to prevent. You say the split is at the end of the chain. That is not good, your splitters should always be home runs either back to a console or another splitter. This eliminates issues and helps with trouble shooting. Other products in the chain as well, exactly how many? DMX has a limit to how much can run down one cable before issues arise. With movers, it...

I realize this is an old thread, but in talking with a pro lighting guy from Nashville last night, I've come to believe that both "tap" and "Elation_Pro" are incorrect about the Opto-Branch 4. 1. You CAN use the DMX Thru port to continue on to other DMX receivers, but standard DMX rules apply (no more than 32 devices on the line, terminate the last fixture on the link, etc). The splitter is just seen as a receiver on the line; nothing more or less. However, if something takes this line down,...

Elation_Pro, I've got one more question for your engineers, then: do the DMX drivers on the shared iso outputs pass voltage between them? If so, then if one goes out, the other also goes out. For instance, let's say you have a scroller cable that goes bad. These pass both power and data through the same cable. If it shorts out, you'll be sending a voltage down the data line and probably take everything down on at least that one line. What will happen to the other line on the shared output?

John, I do not have any .ses files because I do not use Easyshow. I use the "go" button in cycles to execute my cues for live performances. I have never used Easyshow, because I cannot use a time line due to timing. If the band speeds up or slows down, I would be in trouble. That is why I use cycles, and "go" for my cueing. So I do not have any addtional files to send to Jingles. Also as I stated before, all of these bugs are reproduced WITHOUT any of my show data loaded into compu live!
