Re: black lights

I apologize in advance for the very long and off topic post I am about to post. SCR dimmers work by chopping the sine wave of AC. This is how they 'dim'. AC is a wave. DC is a line. Now when power is created, is is created by a magnet spinning in a coil at 60 times per second, thus 60hz AC. This is how and why the wave is created. The little sine wave above, the start as 0 degrees, the first peak point as 90 degrees, the next mid point as 180 degrees, and the bottom peak point is 270 degrees...

Continuing on now: The buzzing noise is known as lamp sing, it's caused by the power being turned on and off really fast. The way this is fixed is more expensive dimmers have what is known as a choke after the SCR so the power change is as dramatic as on/off. The better the quality of dimmer, the less lamp sing you will get. Now why non-dim isn't really non-dim. Despite you setting a dimmer to non dim, either via the pack or the console, the power still passes through the SCR and choke. So,...

Thanks SerraAva for taking the time to explain this. I guess we have been lucky the few times we have used fluorescents on our dimmers. Our neon light continues to function well without use of a special dimmer (and it is 12 years old now), but we are looking to replace it soon with some LED lighting so we can get rid of the high voltage transformer which causes noise on any electric guitars that get too close.

And again, nothing might ever happen. The same time, it might be affecting the dimmer and you don't know about it. It over heats and starts to blink on filament lights, and that might be caused by using neons, fluorescents, etc. You won't see anything blow up and go down in flames, the issues are more likely to be unseen, your neons and fluorescents might burn out early, ghosting dimmers, or you might be very unlucky and have the things stop working. Just as a general rule of thumb, don't...

If so, have you adjusted the speed fader to see if it speeds up? With the Coemars, you need to see if both the dimmer channel and the shutter channel are 100%. Our rep, Jeff Mathis, suggested that controller. The lights will be 8 Par64 LED PRO and 4 American PAR56 (with a DP20L dimmer pack). Most church will do is change colors on the LED and dim the PAR56 fixtures. True that the Magic 260 will run both kinds of lights?

Sorry... I'm a bit late jumping in here and this is just another bit of useful DMX knowledge... per DMX512 protocol document, the maximum number of devices that can be supported per run of DMX is 32 devices. Now... that being said, lest you panic, a dimmer rack counts as 1 device.... The only way to successfully get around this limitation of 32 devices per line is to insert an opto splitter. Then you have the capability of 32 devices per output port on the opto splitter. Honestly though,...

Right click on the page for your hazer, then go to settings. On the top left click on channels, and you will see the channels for that unit. On the channel you want the fader to control, select "enable DIMMER function". Once this is done, go to the edit page for that switch and set the level 100%, then your fader will control it.

Audia, I just saw this post.. are you still having issues? It sounds as if you need some DMX help over there. Using the fixture patch you should have the address of the fixture in the SD2 match the address of the dimmer.. If you not sure what the address is, the address is a 3 digit number that dimmer must have.. then a fixture button on the console should have the same 3 digit number. If these numbers don't match then you wont get any response. If you can't figure it out then we will need...

It certainly sounds like the Lighting system (including the fixtures and front-of-house controller) and the Sound system are all on the same circuit. They really need to be separated. I'm not a sound guy, but to me, if everything is on the same circuit, the amp's relay click might be from the drop in available power, rather than a surge of too much voltage. I'm not sure though. If power is surging into it because of the lights, then I think there is a more serious problem at hand. Power...

Ok, last question before I go to bed. Since I don't have any moving head fixtures just yet it was hard to justify buying the software. However, I threw up some of DLED 36's and I can do some great effects with these that are not possible on my show designer 1. Ok tell me how to accomplish this in the real world. 1. I want to create a dimmer chase for Design LED 36's that I can save and then overlay on any of my other static DLED 36 scenes. i.e. Say I have 3 scenes programmed for my DLED's.

I believe, and I could be wrong, that the DP-DMX20L uses fuses instead of breakers for the channels as well as the pack itself. I would check the fuses and make sure they are not blown. When buying dimmer packs, always try to get breakers instead of fuses. Saves a lot of headaches. Breakers may cost more, but you will make out better when a show you need your packs for doesn't go up thanks to no spare/brunt out fuses.

First question, did you ruin the controller. The answer is no. If anything, you ruined the power supply, but that is also doubtful. You are talking 6 watts vs 3 watts, which is not a lot of power. Second question, just plug and play. You said they have been doing it for a while now, so I am sure you are still fine. After that, I think all your other questions are answered. Must components are capable of handling sightly dynamic loads. For example, almost everything can work on a load from...

First question, depending on the LEDs in question, yes, funny things can happen when you first fade up the first scene. For example, if using the marco commands for color/programs, when you first start, it has to fade through the other before getting to where you want it. The fix for this is easy, write a scene before your first, and set the LEDs with the dimmer channel off. The next scene, keep the LED settings the same, but bring up the dimmer. This should solve the problem. You can also...

Re: Fading to black

Its likely you're fading the DMX channel that controls the dowser/strobe effect which would explain the "instant out". If you're doing a "grand master" type of fade (all DMX channels to zero) lights will NOT fade out properly. You need to build the cue so that the other channels DMX remain at the same levels and you're only decreasing the actual DMX channel that affects the dimmer of the fixture via the dowser.

I think the problem might be that you are turning off scenes and don't have them into a show. The fade times written in scenes only have an effect in shows or jumping between scene to scene. Try programming a show with your scenes and see if that fixes it. Or you can program a scene that has the shutter all the way up and the dimmer out over however much time, that should work. But you will see color, position, gobos, etc change with this. Try doing like I do in the Hog and make the 'scene'...

i'm not 100% sure on the Magic 260. But on the Show Designers' you have an option to have special settings on each channel. So for example on a Gobo Channel you will want a snap before setting and on a dimmer you will want a cross fade setting. I think your Magic 260 has a snap before setting instead of a cross fade setting. Check out your modify fixture settings if there is any. I will check this out Mon morning. Let me know how it goes. Couple things to try. First, did you check you dimmer for that channel? Maybe the dimmer just tripped or the fuse blew and you need to reset it or replace it. Next, did you check the lamps? It is possible that all the lamps on that channel blew out. Also, when a lamp blows out, sometimes it will take the fuse or trip the breaker on the dimmer. Lastly, have you tried anything else in that channel? Try moving the DMX addresses around so another set of lights comes up on that channel. If...

No you cant split the function of a dmx light. either has to be dmx or stand alone. and also do not plug in a DMX light to a dimmer pack EVER. you will ruin the light. the chips and such cannot handle being dimmed in that way. so if you have a led or two at about 6 dmx channels that will use up either 6 or 12 channels on that board. read the PDF and see if it makes sense in there. ok? let me know if you have any more questions after you have read it. Think of DMX like the postal service. A person sends mail (the console) to a certain address (the fixture or dimmer address) via the mailman (the DMX cable). Without the right address, the command or mail can't be received or is delivered improperly. Without the mailman or cable, the command or mail can't be sent at all. And without the sender or console, there is no command or mail to start with.
