Compu 2006 w/ 1024ec, demo mode only

I'm trying to move our 1024ec off of the 10 year old laptop, and on to something a little newer. I installed windows 7 32 bit, and used the same driver files as the one that was on the xp laptop. The computer recognizes the device when plugged in. When I start up compu 2006, I get the error that no dmx interface was detected.

On the starting parameters, universe 1 is selected. the output says USB-DMX. On the XP laptop that works, the output hardware is listed as 1024ec.

also, whenever I exit the program, I get a message that computerized lighting controller has stopped working. not sure if they are related.
