Button Repair Advice?

Hey Guys,
Not sure if anyone has had this issue or might have some insight into it but I thought I'd ask. A few if the push buttons on my SD3 have broken off and I need to replace them. I've order the replacement buttons, but I believe when the old buttons broke, they may have broken part of their plastic off inside the green button housing. Can anyone think of a good way to get this old plastic out without jeopardizing the housing so I can install the new buttons? Anyone had to do this before?

If there isn't enough sticking up through to grab with some pliers you will probably have to get a small drill bit and drill a hole in the middle then use a small wood screw to pull it out.
