Question about Demo Mode

Trying to do some prep on a show that I am involved with using this software. Would like to set up a midi controller to run some dimmers and speed faders and the such. The system is an install so I have no ability to work with the USB-DMX dongle hooked up except when I am there. Prep time onsite is limited. So using the software on laptop without the usb dmx in demo mode.
It is seeming to not read the midi in.. And I can not create the view of the "console"

Any help would be great!
