What are custom buttonsettings for?

Greetings - first time post here. I've been using Compulive for about three months now to do live light shows for bands. I'm trying to get to the next level, including having a MIDI control surface set up to to make live adjustments easier. I've been able to get things working through the "trigger" options on the buttons. The downside seems to be that that can only respond to note data. There seem to be some other options in the "custom" section of the buttons. But I can't seem to get those to do anything. What are they for?

For example, if I set up a MIDI command on a particular channel with some values under button activation, and then send this from a MIDI controller, should the button activate?
