So I was programming some scenes for a show coming up tomorrow on the Show Designer 2 and came across a problem I've had for quite some time.

Whenever I build off previous scenes and then change chases or positions it seems that the moving fixtures always move back to the previous scenes position before moving on to a chase or another position...

So for example I was programming my moving fixtures to do a downward sweep today using two scenes (One with the position set to the ceiling and the other with the position set in the crowd somewhere) and when it gets to the bottom it switches the moving fixtures into a chase. But whenever I run the scenes it first goes all the way back to the ceiling before running the chase finally. It is not an error within the chase because this happens in many different situations and positions...

The only way to get past this glitch is to completely reset by holding the black button down and then building the same scene back up again from scratch and running the chase. This would be a pain to have to do after every recording of a scene. Especially when the next scene is essentially the same thing just with small changes to positions or chases.

Any help is much appreciated... Also, does the Show Designer 2 use output based recording or programmer based recording?

For that to happen there has to be an event in the scene that calls the unwanted position before calling the new one. If you are using presets in your scenes it's possible there are some unwanted channels mixed in the preset. Or I have even seen customers who have position presets mixed in with positions set manually. If you are using an old scene to build from, the new position you are adding will normally replace the old position in the scene. Sometimes old events in the scene hang around if you are building from an old scene that had a slightly different fixture list than what you are working with now. That's why clearing the buffer like you are doing fixes the problem since it erases any old positions. If for example you save a scene with one stage setup, then replace a few of the fixtures then try to reuse that old scene.

The scenes are event based recordings.
So basically I will have to clear my buffer and not be able to program off of old scenes? Or can I just turn off those position presets and/or reset all the moving fixtures pan/tilt to 000 before adding the chase and recording the scene? I tried turning off the presets and positions by resetting the movers pan/tilt value, but it didn't seem to help... Running out of options. I need to be able to program quickly in this environment and clearing the buffer and restarting on every scene isn't really an option.
Are you setting every channel for every fixture in every scene? The controller only records into the buffer what you do from the point in time that you clear the buffer. If you only set a couple channels on a couple fixtures, that's all that's saved in the scene. Scenes are not snap shots of all 1024 channels. If you are playing back in add mode, only the channels in the scene will change. All other channels remain the same and carry over from previous scenes. If you are playing back in solo mode, any unused channels not included in the scene will go to 0.
Are you sure it isn't recording a snapshot of exactly what is output? Here is my recording process:

1. Create intro scene
2. Create modified intro scene from #1
3. Create Verse Scenes from #2
4. Create Chorus scenes from #3

and so on and so forth. Each scene I build is usually built off of the last one (unless there's a change in songs or sets, then I will change the entire look and clear the buffer).

What you are saying is that if I am playing a scene and then modify it and record it somewhere else, it will only record the modified channels?

Maybe I am just using this desk in the wrong way... There aren't any tutorials or examples of how this desk should be used, only the user manual. What would be the best way to utilize this desks functions in a concert and show setting?
The way the scene buffer works is like this;
The user clears the buffer by holding the black switch.
Events are recorded in order as they happen from the panel, channel changes, preset selections, chase selections, etc.
Events can be modified in the buffer, channel changes, presets removed, etc.
The buffer can be then saved as a scene.
When a scene is later recalled, it is loaded into the buffer and replaces whatever was in the buffer before where it can be added to or modified.

Where problems can happen is when old scenes are loaded in that were designed for other lighting setups, different fixture types, etc. and then modified for a new stage setup using different types of lights.
When starting new shows with new fixtures, start over and don't use any old scenes.

You might want to update to the latest software and also download the latest manual if you haven't done it already. The latest manual was rewritten and is easier to understand than before. There are a couple pages that explain how scenes work. It would be worth looking at that and then if you are still having problems, call in to the Elation help desk and have one of the guys go over your setup on the phone. It might be faster for you than going back and forth here on the forum.
