Compact flash or cf error #5

I got 2 of the same compact (CF) card to use with my SD3.. i have version 1.15 M3
this console is new. just installed here at our club in May, 2011

one card worked great when I formatted the card in just FAT, the other CF card was formatted the exact way but when inserted into my SD3 console it gives me a:

CF #05 error
CF format error

both cards are 2 gig microcenter CF cards

If both cards are identical and formatted FAT they should behave the same. That error message comes up when the SD3 first reads the card and doesn't find FAT16 values on the card. Some cards seem to work and others don't but usually are different brands.
