Using shapes in a scene.

I'm pretty new to compu show so please bear with me. I'm trying to use some of the pre-made shapes in s scene that were defined when I added my robe 575xt page (like the figure 8 pattern). I've been able to create scene movement step by step but I was hoping I could copy a scene shape over and over and change the gobo or color with each step. Am I going about this the wrong way? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give.
