BRAND NEW TO LIGHTING

so I just joined a band that has a SERIOUS light setup, but they haven't used it to its fullest capability in along time. as the singer i feel that i've got it easy why not tackle lights (or at least get them to where i can hand it off to someone else w/ a list of what to do) I was a techie in high school theatre but in reading the manual there are just basic terms i don't understand....I know what i want it to look like I just don't know how to get there....is there any tutorials or anything out there that could "dumb down" the manual for a scene setter-48 for me?

We don't have a training DVD for compu live. the one above was for a scene setter 48.

And also The Request Catalog thing on the website is broken. seams to be an Error in the ASP script.
