i am using a leprachan Lp 900 series mixer with 4 elation par 64s led, 8 american dj par 38 leds, 2 american dj H2Os and 6 mini rain leds thru two elation 4 channels dimmers. all of this is ran thur a 100' snake, with a minimum of 100'of wire after the snake run. i continue to get flashing fixtures that are on the dimmers and a "spike" type flash on the led fixtures. is it the snake i'm running thru? do i need to use a termination plug? any suggestions. i have to turn the trim down on the board and it seems to calm it down, but it doesn't go away. do i need to invest in a better dmx board?

hi shake.
1st things 1st..
you need to be using DMX cable.
DMX cable is a digital 110-120 ohm cable.
XLR audio cables create problems. similar to the spikes your experiencing. You should not be running lighting data signal through a snake.
2nd
thing is you cannot use the LED pars on dimmers. the led pars should be DMX and should have direct DMX signal.
3rd
You should have a DMX Opto Splitter on Stage that breaks out to your fixtures. The h20 should have no problem on dimmer.

If you use LED Rain lights with dimmers you need to have the LED Dummy. its a capictor that stores any extra voltage that causes the rain lights to flash.

Maybe LP900 is not the best console. its a good console. but it is made for lamp par cans and dimmer.
4 led par 64's and 8 led par 38's = 12 intelligent light fixtures
You need an intelligent lighting console.

Elation par 64's LED's? what product would this be? we don't have a par 64 LED?
i'm not running the led fixtures thru the dimmers. just the rain and h2o lights...the dimmers are just in the chain...i have 3 of the rain lights and h20 in one dimmer at the beginning of the chain and the others in the last dimmer which is last in the chain. the board was converted to dmx 512...LED dummy?...is that the terminator?, xlr plug with a 10 ohm resistor between the 2 & 3 poles? the led 64s that i'm using are led par zooms. i'm using a elation dmx operator for the pocket scanners. is there a comparable cabling system from foh to stage? dmx opto splitter? is this one of your products?
Good to know.
The board being DMX is not an issue. I think your DMX is fine.
The spikes could be coming through the snake.
this is typical of using microphone cable on lighting.
Change to a DMX cable for your main line.
LED Dummy is not a terminator. it plugs into the 2nd edison socket of your dimmer.
LED rain lights are very low wattage. so low that it absorbs voltage from the dimmer collects it and then releases it in a burst. this is because of how the dimmer is made. The LED dummy is a capacitor that absorbs that extra voltage and stops the burst.
since you are using a snake, i'm guessing you are also using MIC cable to link all your fixtures together. This also causes your spikes and glitches. simply by changing all you data cable to DMX data instead of MIC. all your glitches should disappear.

A DMX Opto Splitter is a signal booster. it helps organize your data downstage.
so your console goes to your opto splitter with dmx signal. Dmx splitter amplifies data signal. then you have 4 outputs.
1 output can go to your dimmers
1 to your par 64's
1 to your par 38's.
this helps isolate your data lines and protect data going back to console and also helps troubleshoot any bad cable in the mix.
thank you John. I appreciate all the input. i had asked several "lighting" guys and yours is the first reply that i have had a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel.
would a Show Q - PROFESSIONAL 512-CHANNEL DMX CONTROLLER help my prospects as well...i will take all your advice until i can replace my mixer with one that will do everything! thanks again.
