We just bought the SS 8 and some light fixtures and are new to this. We are trying to learn how to control the lights via midi thru the SS 8.

The question I have concerns Note numbers 22-37 with the function of turning on or off channels 1-16 as described in the manual. The manual indicates that the3 channel intensity is set by the velocity of the note.

We have observed that DMX values appear to have values ranging from 0 to 255. Midi note velocity values have a range from 0 to 127. So the question is how do the midi note velocity values map to the DMX values? Surely this doesn't mean that you can only set a max of half intensity on each DMX channel.

Can someone explain this? Thanks! Smiler

Sandy,
A dmx channel value from 0-255 is different from a midi note value 0-127.

DMX has 512 channels per universe and each channel responds from value 0-255.

MIDI has 128 notes and each note responds to velocity (volume of the note).

This means the velocity of notes 22-37 will determine the intensity of channels 1-16 on the Stage Setter 8.

Hope this helps

This does not help at all. I already knew that. Say I have a lighting device connected to the Stage Setter 8 via a DMX cable. I have the starting address set to 1 on the lighting device via the dip switches on the lighting device. What I need to know is if I send a midi note - say 22 which should correspond to channel 1 - with a velocity of 127 to the SS8, what value will be sent to the lighting device's channel 1? I am assuming that note 22 corresponds to channel 1.
