In This forum you can discuss tips, tricks, and troubleshooting for Elation's Next Generation Compu Live software, "Compu Show".

Anyone who's been e-stalking me for my lighting stuff already knows some of this. But a big of re-hashing for those who want to e-stalk me. Don't worry, I can still get e-restraining orders!

I hopped into the world computer-based lighting control with American DJ's MyDMX, which, despite being an entry level product, packs a fantastic punch for the buck. I've done a lot with it, and I'll continue to do a lot with it. I really like this software. But, in doing desing for a show, despite the fact I made it happen and work, MyDMX wasn't really an ideal fit for the task. So, it was time to not necessarily move on, but move forward. But that's not the only reason. MyDMX had shown some issues at the past big show, and these problems are just not acceptable. I think the problems have been resolved though. Either way, it's time to move forward.

In moving forward, it seemed that the proper product would be Compu Show, after various discussions with Jingles. It supports time code, and once you get over the initial learning curve, becomes easier and easier to use. This coming week I am doing a "dry run" at home using Compu Show after spending 100 hours a week for 2 solid weeks re-programming the same show in Compu Show. It's not an exact re-programming though. Thanks to Compu Show, it's BETTER!

So, back to my dry run. I intend to do a FULL light set-up under my patio(it's where I have room) and will be doing a full run through. I'm expecting good results. I'm excited. I have to use timecode to drive the show as well. I am expecting good things.

The 3+ months I've spent learning Compu Show are coming together and being put into use. I've programmed the show, now I'm going to test it, and at the end of April, it's going LIVE!! I hope I freak my neighbors out! I will be doing most of my testing during the day, but some will have to be at night.

Well, well, well!

Testing went very well. I didn't do a full lighting test because I would have needed 3 full 15-amp circuits to get it done, so I cheated and only used my LED lights and my 2 Chauvet movers.

1: I've had to run off mainly customized profiles due to issues with the provided profiles that match my lights. I think it's a matter of "well, we can't completed test it if we don't have one here to test with" issue. Not ALL of the profiles required tweaking, some were perfect. But this is trivial. The good thing is I am fairly comfortable with the Scan Library editor now. Also, my profiles work as needed, so again, good.

2: The 3D Visualizer is definately a step up from what I'm used to. Not to knock the one in MyDMX, but the Compu Show one is much more accurate, at least in regards to how my movers were operating. Even so, I only need to use it for "proof of concept" and "sanity checking" 90% of the time. There's only a few sequences where timing is critical. Even so, what I saw in the window matched what I was seeing, best I could tell!

3: Dimming didn't display accurately. Yes, things did dim up and down as expected, but the lights themselves dimmed faster than the 3D Visualizer showed. This can be traced back to my fixtures. Even so, without the 3D Visualizer showing dimming, I'd not have been able to get the job done. My resolve? Get better lights from Elation! Not to knock the ADJ fixtures I'm using, but I do need brighter LED cans anyways.

4: A few glitches here and there, mainly stuff doing a single flash for best I could see no valid reason. Mainly would see a mega Panel to a red flash, but it was doing it at a repeatable time with slaved to timecode being read by Easy Show. Again repeatable, and therefore resolvable through simple means.

5: Since I mentioend time code, there were 2 runs: A basic "stand alone run" with no timecode and things ran really good. I did find errors, but the errors were directly tracable to my programming. Of course, this is the point of running tests like this. When I ran timecode, I was equally impressed. Now, there are some programming issues, but it's based on how I did things, such as a long scene with many steps in it based on timings, so I will break that up later. Bouncing the hell out of the master machine to stress test and try to cause failure to Compu show simply did not work to cause Compu Show to fail. It ran SOLID!! I will say that I'm trying to register MTC-VIdeoSlave to run a side projected video off the second display off the Compu Show machine, and that was a bit rough at first. However, once things I guess fully cached, the whole system was solid and flawless all day and night.

Being able to set the MTC off-sets let me get scary-close sync to Compu Show with the master. The test videos have timecode hard-burned into the video, so no guesswork. I was able to keep things dead on and the drift was absolutely MINIMAL. Even with SMPTE, I would notice drift after 5 minutes, even when using MTC with SPP(song position pointers). Not bad!

I still have work to do, but the show is like 90% done. I need to do my ground fog timings and resolve the last parts of the show. At the same time, I'm pleased. The critical flashes tied to these audio cues(hard coded in Compu Show) come off every single time PERFECT. Other cues like that are dead on.(gun shot spot cut, explosion flash, snap blackouts, all flawless).

Considering what I did in MyDMX to make this happen, Compu Show, as significantly more complex and complicated as it is, honestly has made this show POSSIBLE and BETTER!

Now, I have to do the programming for another show, which is the day before the "big show", although it's produced by the same team, and I do sound, lights, video and other logistics for both as well. With the next show only have 42 lighting cues and many recycled scenes, I think I'll have it done fairly fast!

Right now I wonder how I managed before!
Well, stress testing today went exceedingly well in most regards. Let me put it this way, Compu Show behaved wonderfully. The MTC Video Slave software didn't fare so well, but that's another issue to address later.

The director was going back and forth running scenes and sequences, and although without any physical lights, Compu Show snapped to where it needed to be each and every time according to the Easy 3D, which has, in previous tests, been an accurate representation of what reality SHOULD be.

I did have two problems, but none were with Compu Show.

1: Easy Show was unable to SEND MTC using the M-Audio MIDISPORT 2X2 Anniversary Edition. Using Win7 Ultimate 64-bit, I have a choice of "Class Compliant" driver operation, or "M-Audio Driver" operation. Due to past experiences, mostly being of the "not happy" variety, I chose the class compliant option. First, the MIDI interface DOES work, so I'm not fighting defective hardware. But, if I install the driver, nothing seems to work with it. This interface was bought for testing with MyDMX and Compu SHow and other stuff, due to what appeared to be the death of my original MIDISPORT 2X2. Unfortunately, if I install the driver, the newer 2X2 won't work properly, if at all. But if I use NO driver, I can get at least partial results. But I also want to use the newer interface because it's black, not this day-glo snotty yellow of the original 2X2. But it appears I'll need to install the driver to use the original 2X2, which will in fact pass MTC when Easy Show tells it to do so. Another goofy element to keep in mind: Both interfaces use the same driver. In fact, all the MIDISPORT series use the same driver!

So, READ your manuals carefully and understand your hardware.

I could go on about this, but it's an M-Audio issue tied to maybe OS and/or driver issues, but it's NOT a Compu Show thing. I mean, if one can work fully and another can't, that leads me down the road to "hardware funk".

It broke. So to speak. The director's laptop lost connectivity with my Firewire 410 interface. This happened while I was not around, so since that was providing audio and MIDI access to her machine(and driving the show), well, that just sort of squashed some stuff for rehearsal, but it only affected my testing, so that's OK.

My laptop did not crash. Compu Show didn't even so much as hiccup. I'm feeling good. I'm feeling ready to do battle at the show. Thank goodness. Now I can deal with SOUND issues only!!
