Hi folks,
As I'm playing with lighting and standard pars cans I have come to realize that I am going to have to go to LEDS soon because of the power situation in some of the bars here in new england. Last place we played was puching 96 volts Frowner I am thinking of getting 8 - 12 LED Pars but what size you everyone recommend? Figure a throw distance of 25' from the trees. I'm also considering the myDMX computer controller to start with. I have downloaded the demo and have been playing with it learning it. Can I say that here on the Elation site? I believe they are one in the same company??? I'm sure the Compulive will do more but I'm looking at cash right now.
BTW....this will be for a band, not a DJ service.
Thanks,
Rick the noob

25' is a lot of distance for LEDs currently. Fairly odd though, most of the bars and clubs I work in generally don't have a throw distance greater then 15', which is prefect for LEDs in dark bars. Most have the lights hanging right next to the band. What clubs are you at that have a throw distance that great? I also assume you are talking about front wash with that distance. I would look then to a combination of LEDs for stage/back light and conventionals for front wash due to distance. For shorter throw front wash, LEDs will be great.

It also depends on how dark of a club/bar you are talking about. I know when I am in most bars, my DLED36s are almost too much, but my Opti 30 RGBs work great. Also have a couple sets of Octo Strips that work fairly in dark clubs and wash the stage rather nicely. in brighter situations though, the Octo Strips have no punch what-so-ever. Just look like different color strips at that point, lol. I have done a few installs with a bunch of Par 64 and Par 56 LED cans that work rather well too. But these clubs are again very dark inside. Also remember you will have to run data and power to LEDs, meaning more time to set up and tear down as well as a little more gear to carry around.

As for the power situation, I feel you there. Some rooms I am fine in. Others, even with a tap, the voltage will start at 110-115v, then turn everything on and drop to 100-105v. Once the 5ks start hitting, down below 90v on the bigger hits and hovering around 90v just normally playing. Scary situation to say the least. Have actually had the voltage drop so much and so fast that LEDs actually start dimming. When that happens, you know it is bad...
Hi and Thanks for replying,
I am probely over estimating distance. Maybe that's why I suck on the golf course. It is probebly more like 15 feet max. I am figuring 4 LEDs on each side of the stage and 4 around the drummers riser. Maybe 2 up and 2 on the floor for effect. Then add some more effect tpye lighting in the future. The power at this place was so bad that my controller (scene setter24) kept going into blackout the power was so bad. Finally had to run the lights at half intensity to stay on.
As far as data I was thinking of the myDMX system. I like things on computers I can test before steeing up. i would still have to run lines from my cotroller to the dimmers anyway and I can leave the LEDs mounted on the trees plugged in and just run the data lines.
Rick,

I can recommend the American DJ P64 LED pro's or the Punch Pro LED's as I have both. They are less expensive than the Elation products but have been reliable and worked well for me.

The Punch's have greater throw and are a bit more "Focused" than the 64 Pro's but the 64's have a better overall wash effect. Both are similar in price. If you go with the 64's stay with the PRO version. They are worth the extra money, trust me on this one! I tried to save money and ended up rebuying all the PRO models. They are brighter, have more features and are just better lights overall. Hope this helps.

Hi Rick,

At 15 ft in a Bar almost any LED will work good.
I have seem some pretty bad LED products in a Bar and amazingly they looked good. They lit up the band, which is what you want to do.

For the nicest more robust fixtures if your traveling I would recomend OPTI RGB.
But if they will be installed, you can go with the more light weight fixtures like AMDJ Punch Pro LED.
I personaly prefer the color mixing and light beam of the OPTI RGB, but the Punch pro LED is cool also..
You may want to look at both.
at 15ft to 20ft the P64 will not give you much of a punch..especially after working with Par cans.
Its all in your budget. for sure AMDJ product will be nicer on the wallet.
