Hello everyone,

I'm in the market for new lighting and would like to purchase some moving heads. Our new show is going to be sized to venues as large as House of Blues (2,400 capacity--theater style venue) picture here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/meowhouse/3371232139/

We will have 6 moving heads, each mounted on a 12ft vertical truss. My questions is--which brand/model do I choose?!

There is a WIDE range in price. The very cheapest are $400, $500 and they go up to $50,000. We don't need a ton of functions, mainly we just need it to be powerful enough or bright enough to be used on a stage of that size. It would also be nice to have a few gobos but we really don't need much.

Any advice on this dilemma is much appreciated.

Hey glowkids and welcome to the forums.

I would say you need to be looking at 575w movers for that size space. 300w might work, but not sure you will get the punch like a 575w. The Platinum series would also work nicely in there with the 189w MSD Platinum lamp (they put out roughly the same lumen count as Design Spot 575s). Beyond that, it comes down to what you want feature wise.
I would be careful in which 575w you say it surpasses James. I have a bunch of new 575w fixtures that keep up with 700w fixtures and 850w fixtures that outshine 1200w fixtures on a gig I am doing right now. I won't say what they are out of respect because they aren't Elation/AMDJ products, so please don't ask. Lamp tech has improved a lot in the last couple of years Cool.

MSD Platinum still is the king of lumen per watt right now though Big Grin.
Cabling I am not concerned with. Also, I run everything 208v which means I can fit 5, 6 if I am feeling bold, of those fixtures on one power line. I also use a lot of multi cable. I also don't use wireless and when I do, there is a cable backup anyway. Setup and break down again I am not concerned with. Clients I deal with pay for everything, front to back. Otherwise the event I did this past weekend I wouldn't have had six 140 lb DL3's flipped onto their road cases for two 45'x15' blended screens (and the only reason I mention those is because Elation/AMDJ has nothing that remotely compares to them. They also cost a fortune at 28k a piece).

You are correct that the 5R's are cheaper, but they don't have as many features as the fixtures I am talking about and less of other things (like one rotating, replaceable gobo wheel). Also, the venues I am in, I need the added punch of brighter lamp sources. If you wanted to compare these to something in Elation's lineup, it would be the old Power Spot 700 CMY which actually cost more or a 15R which are less but again less features. And I have done side by sides with everything from a 5R to a 15R (haven't seen a 35R in the wild yet) with every competitor in the book (minus Robe and Chauvet).

Anyway, point is, all lamp tech has improved and a 5R is as bright as older 575's, not newer. When I said 575w, I meant older in the post above (I actually own DS575's and love them Big Grin). Also why I said the Platinum Series with the 189w lamp (aka 5R line) would work nicely. Like I said, it comes down to what features you want as well as how much money you have. Everyone has their own scale for rating of features and I can't say what glowkids scale is Smiler. But once again, MSD Platinum is still king of lumen per watt (even against LEDs) although that the 35R isn't king on the upper range.
Hi SerraAve The DL3 is a great fixture !and it is great that your clients have larg budgets . We were talking about a fixture that would work in small to medium size event 2500 seats or so
.that don;t have big or open ended budget's and you don't have to spend 30 to 40 thousand or more to purchase. The 5R pro or 15R pro are good fixture.s Apple's to Apple's in its class .There are brighter 575 &700 watt fixtures out there for much more money .The liter the fixture the more you can fly .

2500 seat theatre, 5R's and/or 15R's wouldn't have done this. Simplest reason is no animation wheel but other reasons as well. 2500 seat theatres that are that large I wouldn't use 5R's, too weak. I am in a 1000 seat this week and next, same story. Stage is too large with my trim height too high for 5R's. I probably could use them, but they would be fighting with the conventionals too much.

And if you are concerned with weight that much, the show is under sold to begin with. Safety should always be the number one thing. If you can't fly do to weight, that means you robbed Peter to pay Paul. The only major inconveniences weight are is when you are handling the fixtures, which isn't often, and for keeping trucks under weight.

Once again, depends on what you want and what you are looking to do. 5R or Design Spot 575s should be good for glowkids based on the picture he provided Smiler. DS575 has some more features but costs more. 5R has less features and less power consumption with the same punch.
Hi Glowkid
The Platinum 5R pro Should work fine on top of 12' truss. The 15R would be better but coast
more.Designspot 575E is a great light also .
We have both PL.5R pro and DS 575E as well as
DesignWash led 60 Powerspot 575IE and VL's
5R Pro do a lot but no EFX wheel if that is something you need DS 575E is the way to go if not 5R.s or 15R is what i would go with.I say this with more than 30 years in prodution lighting. I have owned or used most other brands all have there PRO.s & Con.s .Based on your post and budget? Elation is the way to go.
If you need help with a Elation purchase and in the Northern New Jersey area we can sell to you or you can contact Elation for a dealer close to you.
